CHAPTER 7

Bridesmaids

The next morning, I meet Lily for breakfast and listen to her complain about feeling like the prized filly being judged by potential buyers. I try to tell her she’s exaggerating, but she disagrees with a huff, still upset with me for not agreeing to be her backup yesterday.

“So what did you do last night?” Lily asks, shoveling a bite of her omelet into her mouth.

I lick my lips and take a drink, and tell her the truth. (Mostly.)

“There was a restaurant I heard about and wanted to try, so I took Bree with me.”

She smiles broadly, “That’s great! I was hoping she wouldn’t just mope around the room. I mean, seriously JoJo, I know I give you a hard time, but Bree lives like a hermit up there most of the time,” she takes a bite of bacon, “or at least that's what she says. I am starting to think there's someone she's not telling me about.”

I squirm a little in my chair.

"Well, it's her own business, isn't it?"

Lily rolls her eyes, "Technically. Maybe," she allows. "But if she feels the need to keep it from me, of course I'm going to worry. Why would she hide anything from me?"

I chuckle, "Right. Because you're so easygoing and open-minded."

I get a full frown this time.

I assume Lily would have told me if she knew her baby sister was into girls, and it's certainly not my place to share. It also causes a slight battle to be waged between my conscience and my sense of self-preservation. I went on a date of sorts with her little sister, she deserves to know.

On the other hand, Sabrina has mentioned not telling her twice and it feels like it would be a betrayal of sorts to her to tell Lily behind her back.

“Did she say anything to you? Has she been seeing anyone at all or did you two just commiserate over being workaholics?”

This one I don’t know how to answer without an outright lie, and I really do hate lying to my friend. (“Well, we kinda made out last night,” might get me stabbed with a butter knife.)

“We didn’t really compare notes,” I dodge and am relieved when she seems to accept the answer. So I start concentrating on my food, hoping the subject will change on its own.

Our meal is nearly finished when Sabrina stumbles through the restaurant toward us, looking like she wasn’t lucky enough to escape the hangover like I was.

“God Bree, did you get the license plate of the truck that ran over your face?”

Sabrina glares at her and plops herself down next to me, resting her head on my shoulder with a pitiful sound. I try not to panic, but if Lily thinks anything of our rediscovered closeness, she doesn’t mention it.

By the time she has eaten, the younger Sapienti in my life has started to recover from her hangover and perk up at the prospect of doing some shopping.

We get some clothes and then Lily spies a Victoria's Secret and makes a beeline for it.
